Are We Over Consumerism???

December 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Today, I went to Great Lakes Crossing, which is a huge discount/outlet mall in Southeast Michigan.

As I waited for my husband to pick the kids and me up, I noticed something.

Hey, are we over shopping over what.

More than half the people leaving the mall had no bags. And every person who did have a bag had only one.

Were people–aahk–using restraint????

To be sure, some of the people may have gone out to dinner or to a movie at the mall, but to see such little real shopping during the weekend really thrilled me.

Maybe we really are turning a corner, saving money.

I am convinced that our economic salvation, ultimately, is not from the government, but ourselves.

Americans will have to be more thrifty, more disciplined, and, yes, buy American.

Our government can do things such as change NAFTA and initiate tariffs on foreign goods, as well as granting tax relief to companies here that manufacture American goods.

But there’s only so much the government can do.

Without citizen capital, these schemes are doomed to fail in the long run.

And only thrift and sacrifice and knowledge will save us.
